Starting the Ramp to Church

The following post features student writing.

For breakfast, today was a little different. We had cereal and milk, as well as blueberry and pineapple and mango yogurt — not “traditional,” but good all the same. Work today was focused on the sidewalk in front of the church, as well as the plaster on the sides of the church. Some shoveled sand and rocks, others wheeled batches of cement, some smoothed cement, and the rest worked on smoothing the repello on the inside and outside of the church. Some townspeople came and helped with the work, which was unexpected but more than welcome. We were also visited by a member of the Peace Corps, whose main project is teaching English, but was biking around Costa Rica looking for a secondary project.

Lunch was spaghetti with meat sauce and parsley pesto, with salad, rice, and beans. After lunch we continued the same projects until the rains came and we had to abandon the cement-mixing, but we resumed work on the walls until 4 PM. After work ended the group visited the Rio Celeste, the local river that flows behind the school, and made plans to swim tomorrow after work. When it gets dark the FIREFLIES come out and light the path back from dinner.

Hasta luego,
